Discussion:
[ale] Ergonomic keyboard that generates <alt>-F1 commands?

Someone pointed out here that the MS keyboard didn't generate the proper
signals for <alt>-F1 virtual terminal switching. Good to know, I thought
it was just me.

Is there a decent ergonomic keyboard that does do <alt>-F1 well? I liked
the MS feel but don't use MS. Or is there a way to take whatever the MS
keyboard generates and translate it?

Thanks!

Leam

Any response on this? My wrists are starting to complain.

Which MS keyboard? I'm typing on an MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 v1.0, KU-0462, 07/2017 right now, using Ubuntu 16.04.3; and ctrl-alt-Fx works from X (xfce4), alt-Fx works from console. You *do* have to switch they keys from 'help', 'undo', etc to F1, F2 - use the 'F Lock' key just to the right of Print/F12 to toggle. Mine has an LED at the very bottom which needs to be ON for the F keys to work.

later!

I like this model.  I'm on my 4th, because I wear them out, which I
don't mind so much because they're relatively cheap ($25).

Heh. Get a mechanical keyboard. They feel way better and they don't wear
out. I'm of the generation that learned to touch-type on a manual
typewriter. I went through about a keyboard a year until my last gig,
where I was issued an IBM Model M
( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard ) good for about five
straight years of really heavy use. Lots of the Model M s built in the
'80's and '90's are still going strong. On E-bay refurbished IBM 'buckling
spring' keyboards are running in the $100-$200 range. They're pretty
noisy, but I kinda like the sound.

I am eagerly awaiting delivery on my custom 104-key V2 from wasdkeyboards (
http://wasdkeyboards.com). It's a mechanical without silly LED lights or
other distractions. I'll let you know how it turns out.

In the mid-1990s, I spent $1.50 and got (3) IBM 101M keyboards at a computer
swap meet. The noise sucks, but the "feel" cannot be surpassed.

I learned to type on electric typewriters, so never had to bang the keys, but I
do wear out laptop keyboards every 18 months or so, which is expensive if you
prefer chromebooks. ;( Laptop keyboards just can't take it ... except the
Dell's seem to last longer and only cost $20 to replace.
