Is there any way to make this annoying behaviour stop?
Wipe OSX, install any version of desktop Linux?

There's also a process to force the Mac to "trust" the application. See
here:

Mac id="-x-evo-selection-start-marker">
I ran into that on installing LibreOffice on a neighbors mac. It
turned out that the icon I was clicking that I thought was to launch
the installed software
was instead and icon to use the virtual disk it had used for
installing the software. The actual run of the program should be
done via a different item. I’ll see if I can find the link that
talks about that.

Have moved my wife (a retired academic who only knows Macs) away from
MIcrosoft to Libre Office. Only one problem: Every time she tries to
use Libre Office the Mac insists on "verifying",
which takes 5 minutes -- or MORE!
Is there any way to make this annoying behaviour stop?

I really should have written it down at the time but apparently didn’t. I don’t have that Mac to look at to remind me.

Today I found the suggestions about running xattr and trusting the app but my recollection was that even doing those at the time I finally figured out what I was clicking on was not the installed program but rather a local “virtual disk” it creates when you do the download.

This link is on the right track.

Based on what it says I *think* what I found at the time was the icon was a disk image (.dmg) file and I was able to drag the app to applications as it suggests.

That will solve the technical issues but start homebrewed social
issues. It's probably easier to get heroin addicts to quit cold-turkey.

Never been an issue here for years & on various versions of OSX.
It's always Just Worked.

1. When you double-click/launch the .dmg ("disk image") file,
it should "mount" as its own little filesystem, looks to me
alot like the loopback thing Linux has. This is probably
the part where it "verifies" but it might not.
2. Drag the LibreOffice icon to where you want it - I use my
own "private" applications folder but you can put it in the
system one if you like.
3. You should now have it installed.
4. Be sure to "eject" the mounted "filesystem" that resulted
from your launching that .dmg.
5. To uninstall, merely drag the icon you originally copied
over to trash.

Hope helpful, -Ken
