Related question as the local Goodwill store sometimes has Macs and I want
to stay legal. If I get an old mac where can I get a legal, if old, OS copy?

Thanks!

I think you are legal if you own the hardware.

Apparently power PC CPU has instructions for working with vectors similar
to SSE for x86.

Is anyone aware if is been used in Linux port.

Ah. The joy's of closed source, welcome to f*$%ing software jail,
apple.
'You don't' is the short answer. The license for the old OS is once per
machine, 2 per family, NON-TRANSFERABLE.
According to an analysis of the license terms (that I now can't find on
the interwebs) that hardware can be sold or given away but the
software license is no longer valid. The new owner is required to
purchase a license even if the box came with working OS.
That screws donated hardware to non-profits.
Apple want's people to buy new stuff at least every 2 years so the new
OS is available free for new hardware (with Apple account and built in
user tracking - of course it's only used to improve products). The non-
supported versions of OSX are purged from the public space (and legals
sent to takedown unauthorized download locations as fast as they pop
up.). Old hardware is not cool enough for the turtleneck crowd.
Run Linux on the old hardware. Debian still has a ppc port. Check here
for details:

Gentoo Linux is officially supported on nine different CPU
architectures, PPC and PPC64 among them. At A Previous Employer (tm) I
had Gentoo on x86_64, Via C3 x86-alike (Wyse thin client), and SPARC at
the same time, all happily running modern versions of everything.

I've tried Debian 8 PPC. It works until you load full size browser. CPU
goes %100 fan goes %100 to which makes the good looking box annoying. The
only thing could be server appliance.

Makes great boat anchors and shooting range targets. Gut them and drop
in a few RaspberryPi systems.

I have seen the Genius bar load OSX on old computers. They can also run
diagnostics on the computer to check for any hardware issues.

I think osx 10.3.7 is minimum. But if I purchase something older definitely
would give you a call.

What would you ask the set.

Thanks
