James,

It was strange, I tried to installed openSUSE, on Mac is only should basic
disc and if I selected it,itshow 1. 2. nothing else. When I placed Debian,
it showed EFI and I was able to install.

I used pfSense, with a 13 year boy, I have to block sites.
openSUSE shouldn't require EFI partition if you install it in legacy mode,
and do your own partitioning.
I have all of mine installed that way.
I'm running Leap15, the latest (in RC at the moment) and it works fine
that way.

Guys,
A friend gave me a 2008 Mac Macbook ( White ), I was going to try to run
mac os on but, it seem it can only go up to 10.8, nothing runs on that any
more.
So, I can't install openSUSE, it won't read the EFI correctly, so I have
Debian 9 installed on it. This laptop is going to my 6 years old who had
been begging me for a laptop. Is there a Kid Desktop? MacOS has that, I
used it with my son. I have XFCE installed, I am willing to install
something else if it gets the big button on the desk top.
She had a tablet, but more and more she wants to be like her parents. This
MacBook still has a lot to offer, 4 Gigs of Memory, 320 GB HD, and 2.4 GHz
Core Dual, plus a great way for her to learn.

Have you tried SUSE Studio? Need to create a Live CD, an app you want to
package and distribute , or create your own linux distro. Give SUSE Studio
a try.

Also easy enough to set OpenDNS FamilyShield. I’ve had a good experience
with it on my kid’s Fedora workstation.

ew! cisco! data logging for fun and profit!
I recommend squid proxy with squidguard. It blocks (configurable by
admin user) and logs for later checking.

I am doing that, even working on install RetroArch with Emulastation on it.

Here is the spec of the MacBook.

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.4-white-13-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
Just load up the kids games and edu stuff. Give her all the same stuff you
use and she'll be super happy. Nothing better than a budding kid nerd :-)
"Kid Mode" is in the network access :-) (block facebook just because) The
kids don't go looking for adult stuff until it's pretty much time for the
talks anyway.
I had one of those and Fedora ran pretty well on it. Hmm. It may have been
older than a 2008. It may have had a ppc chip. I don't recall if white
macbooks were made with intel cpu or not.

I run 10.6 and 10.7 on my main Mac systems. Refused
the forced migration when 10.8 and a couple subsequent
releases broke some critical softwares.

Internet is still mostly solid, though browsers report that they
are no longer supported. Only big annoyance is having to
use Chrome for FaceBorg since Messenger hard crashes
the old Firefox pretty persistently. Chrome also for Netflix
streaming and Safari for Amazon and Mafia$oft Silverblight
(though I also have the ROKU III for those two sources, so
not critical that I support them on my computers).

Currently building a 10.12 Sierra image to see if I can migrate
to that and still have a functional system with all my mission
critical tools and interface preferences. The Mac garden wall
is always getting thicker and more annoying to cut through with
each downgrade release, but It looks like I can stay with Mac
for a few more years under 10.12.

I've pretty definitely bought my last Mac though, with the
recent salvage of 27" iMac to go with a deal on a 27"
ThunderBolt display. My best hardware systems are
all new enough to accept Sierra, so I can probably keep
my systems on line for another 7 years or so, after which
I can move to something FLOSS for the outside world
and continue my media work offline.

in peace,
aaron
