[ale] Chromium Browser

Hey everyone!

I recently installed openSUSE on a virtual machine and wanted your opinions
in regards to a suitable internet browser. I have always used many
different google applications (gmail, google drive, YouTube, etc.) and was
initially thinking of using Google Chrome over Firefox (due to the fluidity
of the applications with that browser). However, I am aware of how
laborious Chrome is on a computer in terms of ram, battery life, etc. After
some research, I found out about Chromium, an open source version of
Chrome. Has anyone used this specific browser for openSUSE or any other
distro? If not, what other browser do you use?

Much appreciated,
John Jajeh

I'm a die-hard Firefox user, so you can guess my recommendation. I use
what has consistently worked for me.
Plus, it is included with the base OS, and you won't have to add another
repo.
Good choice on openSUSE, BTW!

I have been recently using Brave with Vivaldi as my secondary browser.
Brave has ad blocking built in and on by default. It also seems to have
no problems with page rendering or playing videos on the sites I tend to
visit. I have not closely checked memory usage of either. Brave, I
believe, has its own rendering engine as it built using Rust. Vivaldi is
a Chromium derivative, so I would expect to have a similar footprint to
Chromium.

I use Chromium every day. All browsers suck: Chromium is one of the
less sucky browsers. I find firefox now so bloated that I can't use it
for more than 10 minutes at a time.

My experience has been that browsers go bad and then get good again, so
your choice of browsers is best viewed as something fluid.

I use firefox mostly, chromium for some internal stuff where it works better and palemoon for the java plugin required for remote consoles.

My firefox typically has 20+ tabs running until I forget why I opened them. I'll dump and restart fresh about once every 2 weeks.

Don't really need a little spy logging me so compiled chrome is banished. Of course I'm doing nothing wrong for some definition of "wrong".

I use different browsers for different purposes, under different conditions.

At home, accessing web resources I control, I'll use firefox. The network there
blocks 30K+ "bad" domains and firefox is set to block most javascript should I
accidentally be redirected somewhere I don't know.

I do not use firefox "in the wild."

At home, when I do online banking or brokerage stuff, I'll run chromium in a
"private" firejail or in a live-boot virtual machine. In that mode, I don't
visit anywhere else, ever. There is nothing written to disk.

At home, when I need to log into something like google docs, I use a firejail
constrained chromium. It is allowed to write only to the HOME directory areas
necessary, but nowhere else.

Outside the home, I use chromium in a private firejail, with a SOCKS proxy or
VPN back to my home network. Chromium is easier to enable/disable the SOCKS
proxy via a script than firefox. It is just a commandline option.

When I'm in a real hurry and need something lite, I'll use either lynx or dillo.

Firefox is tremendously bloated. It seems to want to use 2G just to show up and
4G to look at 1 website.

Chromium is also a hog, plus I really dislike the interface. Things I want are
too many clicks away and there don't seem to be accel keys for them.

dillo is really fast, and doesn't support javascript or SSL/TLS (well, it
doesn't verify certs), so I use it for quick wikipedia lookup and when I'm
forced to visit those terrible media websites like CNN or the AJC 1-2 times a
year. I hate their web designs, but I'm not trying to pay employees through my
website, so it really isn't fair.

So, there you have it. Different browser for different uses and under different
security environments based on my guessed risk levels.

I agree with Allen on Firefox for the reasons he mentioned.
That said, I've never tried chromium, so I can't rate it.
